Ladies and um, more ladies.. we have an announcement to make...

I've been meaning to tell you guys but we just wanted to wait until like 8 weeks-ish.

We were really ready to expand our family and just wanted the timing to be perfect.

When Adie's every other word was about the new sibling she wanted.. we just couldn't stand it any longer.

Introducing the new member of our family....

Our little 8 week one pound bundle of energy (and pee for our floor)...

Wrigley

(Yes, we are big ol' Cubs fans)

Adie's every other word is "puppy" and we don't even have one. We knew we wanted one soon so after our date night on Friday night we drove by an Amish house with puppies for sale. So we stopped. And can you believe it was DARIN that fell in love first with the little guy? We don't have a fence yet, are going to be away next week at church camp and had NO INTENTION of bring home a puppy this weekend but we fell in love. He's 1/2 Shiz Zou and 1/2 Rat Terrier so I don't even know what his name would be. A Shiz Rat maybe?

That's why we call him Wrigley. =/

Anywho.. his mom was 15 lbs and his dad was 10lbs. Hopefully he'll fall in between somewhere in there in the poundage department. AND he doesn't shed. And doesn't need groomed. Perfect.. just as long as we can figure out that bladder of his. Tapped into Hanni yesterday and tried to get the crash course on crate training. So yeah, if anyone wants to pipe in my comments on how you potty trained your pooch it would be greatly appreciated.

And stupid me didn't get a picture of Wrigley nipping at Adie's butt when she was in her swimsuit today.. totally looked like the Copertone baby picture. =) She loves him too! Everytime she wakes up from her nap he comes galloping in and she says "Puppy!" because she totally forgot she has one now.

Welcome home, Wrigley!!!

KA is bragging (rightly so) about your puppy... he's HANDSOME! I don't know the potty habits or potty training issues that might follow one of his mixed heritage but one thing that SHOULD work is

Catch him in the act, swoop him off his feet and plop him down outside use a "code word" that you can repeat often that ONLY means "potty" for you and your Wrigley.. we use "potty". Say the word WHILE the dog is doing his biz (in the right place).

When yow "swoop him" startle him enough to make him aware that it's not a happy occasion but don't scare him so that he thinks going is a bad thing, or he won't go and that will open up a whole new issue. Don't say anything to him when you catch and swoop but as he does his thing outside encourage with your code word and reward him when he's done a good job.

I hope this helps!!

Very cute! I think he needs a little Vera collar - even if he is a boy. . . :) They have blue ones, right?!

I've heard that sometimes with the little bitty dogs who can't make it far when they realize that they have to potty keeping him in a confined area (only the kitchen/living room) or whatever...and then having a little puppy potty pad by the door helps him to start to realize that he has to go and he can have time to at least head for the door. If you give him too much space to roam it will take him longer to get to where he's supposed to "go"! I have a couple good puppy books/videos if you wanna borrow them!

Ha-ha! When your blog first came up on my computer I could only read the title and, of course, I thought you were PG!!!! Congratulations on the puppy! He's very cute and will most likely become Adie's best friend. We have two dogs and we crate trained them when they were pups- it worked out very well!

Oh my gosh, Darcy, I felt like I was reading about my life. I'm not sure if you've been reading my blog or not but we just got a puppy at the end of May. She's now 3 mo. old. And we are dealing w/the same thing...potty training! And Braylon loves our puppy Jade too! I agree w/Sherry. That's what we've been doing. Also, we have hung a little bell on the door that goes out to our back yard. She's suppose to learn to ring the bell when she has to go potty & then we'll let her out. Our vet also said that puppies don't learn potty training until 4 mo. old! So I'm thinking "ok, we've got 1 month left!"

I forgot to say that we also got our puppy from an Amish family! In Middlebury.

Whatever at first you had me so excited I thought you were prego. Remember I have dial up and it takes like 20 minutes for a pic to come up!! But if I had to find out on here, I might drive to your house, yell at you, then scream happiness sounds with you :)

I have my blog up and running, add it to the blogs you dig :)

Love you and cant wait to show you how the thing I made for my dad came out. It was awesome!!!

Super-cute pup! :) I have a Rat Terrier! He's an incredible dog. I hope your new pup brings you as much happiness as mine!

Tips for house-training:
- Always take him to the same spot outside to "potty".
- Reward somehow when he goes where you want (a treat, attention, etc.).
- Don't let the dog see you cleaning up accidents in the house (I read somewhere that they think you're "playing" in it & so they think it's ok).
- Don't confuse them by using those puppy pads & letting them go inside. It's hard enough for them to learn, don't add to the confusion.
- Take him outside OFTEN. Every 2 hours at least because he's so small. And especially after he eats.

For crate-training:
- Start off with short times in the crate.
- I've heard to sleep with a blanket for about a week, and then put that blanket in the crate. It has your scent on it & makes the dog more comfortable.
- Give some sort of treat in the crate (I use Kongs with peanut butter).

Ok, that's enough. I'm just so excited to share ideas. Your pup is soooo cute! Congrats.
